Expanded Statement of Institutional Purpose Linkage:
MidAmerica Nazarene University is a comprehensive liberal arts university…that seeks to transform the individual through intellectual, spiritual, and personal development for a life of service to God, the church, the nation, and the world…The motto of MNU is: (1) to learn, which includes a pursuit of excellence, (2) to serve, which includes Christ-like compassion, and
(3) to be, which points to a journey of wholeness (MNU Catalog, 2006-2007, p. 4).
The purpose of the Christian education of the Division of Nursing at MidAmerica Nazarene University is to: (1) prepare professional nurse generalists who are knowledgeable and skillful in the delivery of safe, competent, and creative nursing care; (2) integrate personal, empiric, aesthetic, and ethical ways of knowing (Carper, 1978) as a basis for promoting optimal health; (3) enhance spiritual sensitivity in personal growth and service to others; and (4) develop life-long learners who strive for personal and professional growth as individuals who are responsible and accountable members of their profession and society.
The seven nursing student outcomes build on the same seven general education outcomes of the university.

graduation. 100% met the goal.
c. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program: No changes at this time. See Evaluation
Day meeting minutes of 5/9/08.
Second Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
a. Means of Program Assessment and Criteria for Success: External & Internal Assessment.
(1) NURS 4183, Nursing Internship: Clinical Evaluation Tool (CET) related to the program outcome of “Aesthetic Literacy.” This CET is completed by the clinical preceptor at the midterm as well as the final week of the course, and (2) student self-assessment of how they met exemplars of the “Aesthetic Literacy” outcome during the clinical rotation (as graded by nursing faculty with an established rubric). Criterion for success: 100% of students will successfully complete the NURS 4183 Nursing Internship course requirements, specifically by earning passing scores on the CET and passing scores on the self-evaluation (100% achievement of checklist completion).
Because the Nursing Internship Clinical (NURS 4183) is the capstone experience to assess clinical competence prior to graduation, nursing faculty wanted to assure adequate assessment of student performance in a rigorous manner. During this final clinical rotation, students are paired with nurse preceptors on a variety of clinical units in hospitals throughout the KC area (see Appendix B with the course evaluation/summary of this information). This year students were allowed to submit requests for their selection of facility, unit, and shift preferred to work. Once this information was compiled from students, nursing faculty attempted to find a “match” with the students’ interests and facility availability. Clinical preceptors were selected by unit managers at various agencies. This year nursing faculty continued to use the “Clinical Evaluation Tool” (CET), which applied the seven program outcomes to acute care clinical nursing practice. This CET allowed clinical preceptors to better assess students’ abilities in achieving success with nursing program outcomes. It also provided an external means of assessment regarding outcome achievement. Additionally, students completed a self-evaluation providing specific examples of how they met exemplars of the seven program outcomes as they related to clinical practice, and nursing faculty graded this work with an establish rubric (examples provided in Appendix B).
b. Description of Data Collection & Assessment Results: A copy of the CET and template
of students’ self-evaluation tool is attached to this report (see appendix B). Additionally, a
sampling of a CET provided by a nurse preceptor and a sampling of student self-evaluation is
provided (Appendix A). The goal that 100% of students will successfully complete the
NURS 4183 Nursing Internship course requirements, specifically by earning passing scores (100%) on the CET and passing scores on the self-evaluation (graded by nursing faculty with an
established rubric) was met.

1. Scientific Literacy is the acquisition of nursing’s unique body of knowledge and an understanding of the processes by which that knowledge was achieved and can be developed. The student will evidence scientific literacy by:
a. integrating knowledge from physical and social sciences into personal nursing knowledge and practice;
b. utilizing nursing experiences to expand and refine personal knowledge/practice;
c. understanding nursing’s unique body of knowledge;
d. demonstrating evidence of being a knowledgeable consumer of nursing research; and,
e. recognizing nursing research as a method of problem solving and contributing to nursing’s unique body of knowledge.
First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
- Means of Program Assessment and Criteria for Success: Successful completion (100%
achievement of checklist/rubric) of the senior-level nursing portfolio chapter addressing outcome of “Scientific Literacy.”
b. Description of Data Collection & Assessment Results: Portfolios were collected from 35

c. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program: No changes at this time. See Evaluation
Day meeting minutes of 5/9/08.
Third Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
a. Means of Program Assessment and Criteria for Success: External Assessment. Passing the
NCLEX-RN examination on the 1st attempt is an important goal of every nursing program.
Nursing faculty work very hard to assure success of this outcome. The ATI NCLEX-RN
predictor test is administered for the purpose of assessing strengths and deficits of student
knowledge prior to the NCLEX-RN examination. The established criterion of success for this
outcome is that 90% of students’ individual scores on the ATI NCLEX-RN predictor test (1st
time) will be above the 50th percentile compared to national results.
b. Description of Data Collection & Assessment Results: Of the 35 senior nursing student who
took this exam, 28 passed on the 1st attempt (80%). Goal not met, but improved from last year
(see Appendix E).
c. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program: The NCLEX review course (NURS 2223)
reviewed the topics where students scored below the 50th percentile on the ATI-NCLEX
predictor exam. Failing students were also asked to create a study plan to review content
weaknesses as part of the course. Of the 7 students who failed the initial attempt, 2 passed the
ATI-NCLEX predictor test on the second attempt. A 3rd attempt was necessary for five students.
Fourth Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
a. Means of Program Assessment and Criteria for Success: Internal Assessment. In the
NURS 4003 Nursing Research & Informatics class, a comprehensive final exam was developed to assess students’ knowledge of scientific research methodologies. The goal of nursing faculty is for students to recognize research as a method of problem solving and contributing to nursing’s unique body of knowledge. This was the established criterion of success: 80% of students will pass the final comprehensive exam with a score of ≥ 75%.
b. Description of Data Collection & Assessment Results: A copy of the final exam, along with
its statistical analysis and student performance is attached to this report. 85.7% (30 out of 35
students) passed the final exam with a grade of ≥75%. Goal met (see Appendix F).
c. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program: No changes at this time. See meeting
minutes of 12/20/07 for a more thorough discussion of this outcome.
