Sub Unit Mission Statement: MidAmerica Nazarene University’s Alumni Office exists as a resource & service organization to the Alumni & Friends constituency.  Alumni & Friends will be educated about the university, inspiring them to become involved with the university, and providing them with opportunities to build relationships with the university and each other.

Institutional Mission Statement: A Christian community in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, MidAmerica Nazarene University seeks to transform the individual through intellectual, spiritual, and personal development for a life of service to God, the church, the nation, and the world.

Outcome # 1: Establish strategic areas in the United States with large and active concentrations of alumni

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

A.

Identify potential alumni clubs

20

11

B.

Recruit 2 leaders per identified club

40

3

C.

Establish active alumni clubs

10

0

Data-Driven Improvements:

  1. In order to reach the goal of identifying more clubs, the Alumni Office will continue to use available research and mapping tools in identifying areas across the US, where concentrations of MNU Alumni & Friends occur.
  2. To reach the goal of identifying two leaders per club, lists of constituents for each club area, will be distributed to MNU administrators, solicitors, and admissions counselors.  Because these positions travel for the university and, in most cases, are assigned territories, they have a working knowledge of the constituents and would be able to recommend potential leadership from the constituency lists.
  3. Establishing the goal of active alumni clubs, will be achieved by 1) assigning and training leadership for each club, 2) advertising to the constituents in those areas, 3) scheduling gatherings in the club areas, 4) launching the clubs at the campus Homecoming event.  To date, samples of alumni association handbooks have been gathered from other universities.

Outcome # 2: Profile MNU alumni

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Current Status:

A.

Identify Top 10 MNU alumni career fields

10

0

B.

Establish a resource collection of successful alumni stories

25

5

C.

Collect preferred email addresses for Alumni of Record (AoR)

100%

33%

Data-Driven Improvements:

A.  To reach the goal of identifying to alumni career fields, the Alumni Office will identify and use available methods of research, via the Raiser’s Edge database.

B.  The goal of establishing a resource collection of successful alumni stories will be met via correspondence from faculty, staff, and Alumni & Friends, as well as newspaper and print information.

C.  As of 6.27.06, there are 16,300 Alumni of Record (AoR) and 5,400 alumni with valid email addresses.  To meet the goal set, the Alumni Office will increase response opportunities, by collection valid constituent email addresses via requests on each mailing, on the website, during personal contacts and then, provide ease of response for the constituents.

Outcome # 3: Educate and inspire alumni about MNU

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Current Status:

A.

Host local gatherings as an opportunity for campus leadership to address diverse audiences

B.

The Accent magazine will be used to cultivate alumni

One alumni success story or profile per Accent

One club update with pictures per Accent

Alumni profiles published in:

  • Summer, 2007
  • Fall, 2007
  • Summer, 2008

Club updates not published

C.

Increase the quarterly average number of unique visitors to the Alumni website

Average of 60 hits/quarter

Average of 49 hits/quarter

Data-Driven Improvements:

  1. Former Director of Alumni, Marci Theel hosted a gathering for Garmin employees in July 2007.

Under the new direction of Deb King, plans are being made to host multiple gatherings during the fiscal year.  The Garmin luncheon will be repeated in July, 2008.  Homecoming ’08 will be considered a gathering, as will General Assembly in June, 2009.  The Alumni Council has been tasked with coordinating with local and regional club members to develop a plan for local and regional gatherings, beginning November 2008.  As such, it is with confidence that this goal will be boosted to 5 gatherings for the 2008-2009 reporting period.

  1. The Accent magazine is an area of improvement for the Alumni Office.  Under the new leadership, there is a stronger focus on including alumni profiles.  Including alumni profiles with consistency will be larger area of focus.  This goal and means of measurements will remain a focus for the 2008-2009 reporting period.
  2. The Alumni Office will increase its goal for unique hits to the website via a new e-blast system, which will drive viewers to the MNU website and Alumni & Friends page, using video links and stories of on campus events, places, and people.  Additionally, we will increase constituent use of the website via advertising in all mailings and increased collection of constituent email addresses.

Institutional Mission Statement: A Christian community in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, MidAmerica Nazarene University seeks to transform the individual through intellectual, spiritual, and personal development for a life of service to God, the church, the nation, and the world.

Outcome # 1: Provide Intercollegiate Athletic competition for the University and local community that reflects the values and goals of the institution.

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Current Status:

A.

Analyzing results from question #24 of the Student Satisfaction Inventory to assess students’ feeling of school spirit engendered by the Intercollegiate Athletics program

The difference between student perceived importance and satisfaction (gap) for question #24 of the SSI will be below the national average of .78

For the 2007-08 school year the gap for MNU on question #24 of the SSI is .73

B.

Each Intercollegiate Athletics team will be intentionally exposed to a presentation on the core values of the NAIA Champions of Character program.

At least 75% of the MNU student athletes will sign the Champions of Character student pledge to abide by the NAIA’s five core values.

No students signed for the 2007-08 school year.

Data-Driven Improvements:

A.  Goal was achieved for the 2007-08 school year.  Students report a strong sense of school spirit.

Maintain a desirable gap for next year.

B.  The presentation and opportunity for students to sign the pledge did not occur last fall due to budget cuts that cancelled the annual banquet.  In consultation with the incoming athletics director for Fall 2008, an effort to provide an opportunity for presentation and signing of pledges at the beginning of the school year will be made.

Outcome # 2: Provide opportunities for developing cooperation, leadership, and spiritual growth among MNU student athletes.

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Sub Unit Mission Statement: University Advancement seeks to enhance the visibility of MNU, build a new generation of friends and relationships, and raise an increasingly higher percentage of support for MNU’s operations, capital projects, and endowment & life income gifts.

Institutional Mission Statement: A Christian community in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, MidAmerica Nazarene University seeks to transform the individual through intellectual, spiritual, and personal development for a life of service to God, the church, the nation, and the world.

Outcome # 1: To establish a vibrant University Fund program

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Current Status:

A.

Increase University Fund by 23% over the course of the 2008 fiscal year

$912,222

B.

Increase the number of unduplicated donors who make a gift of $1,000 or more

148

117

C.

Increase faculty/staff giving rate for all giving purposes

75%

32%

Data-Driven Improvements:

  1. Current status figure represents gifts received from July 2007 – June 2008, however, the goal figure accounts for transitioning financial reporting from a fiscal year to a calendar year.  Beginning July 2008, development officers will increase the number of face-to-face contacts to 20 per month per FTE (3.0).  The office of University Advancement will increase its focus on soliciting and receiving gifts for unrestricted scholarship support.  Goals will be adjusted accordingly to reflect transition to calendar-year reporting.
  2. The University Club, a recognition society for donors contributing at least $1,000 per year to the University Fund was established. Donors receive a custom receipt letter welcoming them to the University Club and will be recognized in future annual reports.  Donor categories need to be renamed to reflect this change prior to the publication of the 2008 annual report.
  3. Calculation:  (175 donors/553 constituents = 32%).  Hired a director of development for annual programs to replace former director of Annual Giving, Kyle Henne.  New director of development will begin August, 2008, and will focus development efforts on parents, annual giving, and faculty & staff programs.

Outcome # 2: Implement a comprehensive stewardship program

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Current Status:

A.

Student Thank-A-Thon will communicate return on investment to donors

60% of donors will be contacted and thanked for their gift by students

No progress

B.

Development officers will conduct stewardship contacts each month

125 stewardship contacts per year

93

Data-Driven Improvements:

  1. The Student Thank-A-Thon was not conducted during this reporting cycle.  It is recognized as an important element of donor stewardship.  It is tentatively scheduled to occur between September 15 and November 15, 2008.  Students will call donors and will keep a record of the number of contacts made as a result.
  2. The development officers did very well stewarding gifts to the University.  As donor face-to-face contacts increase, so will the overall number of stewardship contacts that are made.  Development officers will consistently write personal notes of appreciation for gifts greater than $1,000.

Outcome # 3: Increase the impact of the MNU Foundation on the overall fiscal health of the University

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Current Status:

A.

Increase the gifts made to the MNU Foundation

$511,800

$309,917

B.

Increase the managed portion of the MNU Foundation by 15% through cash inflows and investment performance

$11,252,530

$9,480,838

Data-Driven Improvements:

  1. Refer to improvements for outcome 1.A.  The current status figure represents gifts received July 2007 – May 2008, as June 2008 figures are not yet available due to pending reconciliation.
  2. The Investment Policy Statement will be updated.

Outcome # 4: Establish a comprehensive planned and deferred giving program

This outcome will be measured by:

Goal:

Current Status:

A.

Write $3,000,000 in new planned or deferred gifts

$3,000,000

$50,0000

B.

Increase the number of known donors who will make planned or deferred gifts to the University by 50%

39

0

C.

Increase the number of planned and deferred giving seminars conducted in churches within MNU’s educational zone

10

9

Data-Driven Improvements:

  1. Refer to Outcome #1, Goal A.
  2. University Advancement is in the process of establishing a recognition society for donors who make planned or deferred gifts to the University.  The recognition society will be called the Cornerstone Society.  The launch of the Cornerstone society will be published in a future Accent magazine and will be communicated to donors by the development officers.
  3. The goal of conducting 9 planned and deferred giving seminars was nearly met, with the development officer conducting church visits January 2008 – April 2008.  This will be an annual goal.  One FTE development officer will be dedicated to planned and deferred giving, and will focus his/her efforts on conducting church visits throughout the year.
